Nick Carlson

With integrity and courage, Nick Carlson’s battle with Amyloidosis ended Monday morning, December 12.

He touched many lives in the Hayward community. A product of Hayward schools, and Mt. Eden High School Student Body President in 1969/70.  Nick taught for 35 years in HUSD. He worked at Schaffer Park, Park, Highland, Eden Gardens, Darwin as a teacher for the Emotionally Disturbed and back to his home at Eden Gardens. During this time he also was a volunteer coach in the community for Mt. Eden American Little League and Hayward Youth Soccer League. He was an avid supporter of Southgate Swim Team, known for his booming, jovial voice, he was often heard announcing swim meets on the weekends and cheering on his children and their friends. He coached the Mt. Eden High School varsity girls’ soccer team for 15 years and the Hayward High varsity girls’ soccer team for 2 years. He was voted North Coast Section Honor Coach and was a BTSA support provider. After retirement, Nick continued to give to the HUSD community as a frequent volunteer at Ruus and Eden Gardens and was recognized for his lifelong dedication to the students of Hayward as a Hayward Hero.

In addition to his many activities, Nick mentored many current HUSD teachers. Always welcoming and supportive, he had a way of encouraging the best out of students and fellow colleagues. Known for his integrity and gregarious personality, there was rarely anyone who had a negative thing to say about him. His absence will be sorely felt.

Mr. Carlson, his wife and children were all educated in HUSD schools. He is survived by his wife Cherie Carlson, a retired HUSD para-educator (22 years), his children Jeremy Miller and Jenn Miller-Carlson and Jocelyn Kelton, who has followed in her father’s footsteps and teaches at Ruus Elementary, as well as three grandsons, JT, Owen & Declan.
